![]() ![]() When deciding to invest in a company whose platform will serve as the foundation for a series of add-on acquisitions.When looking to take a technology used internally and make it a platform for use by end customers or users.When evaluating whether or not a technology-enabled service is compatible with the platform of an acquiring company.Here are a few different scenarios where its construct can help drive effective change: The People Process Platform framework is simple yet powerful. Finally, what is the support structure for both end users and the underlying platform infrastructure? Is the code well-organized and documented? Are modern languages, methods, frameworks and services used? What’s the level of automation from the build process all the way through the quality assurance process? While many people advocate for adding “data” or “information” to the framework (turning it back into a diamond), we consider it to be part of the platform, so we also investigate the data architecture and structure to see if it adheres to best practices. Our goal is to find out how well they’re constructed. Most development teams we evaluate build Software-as-a-Service platforms. If given the time, we usually observe the teams as they work and hold ceremonies to get a sense of the process from the inside out. Are they using modern methodologies, like Agile? Are they inspecting and adapting, and holding retrospectives to improve continuously? Is the development process documented and followed? We also look at how the people align with the process: Do they understand the process and how they fit into it? How are requirements elicited, managed and prioritized to be added to the development backlog, and how do they communicate progress to their stakeholders? Are they trained and onboarded into the way the team or company works today? In our experience, analyzing and documenting the development process often brings details about the people and platform to light. We want to learn how the development team builds solutions. Are roles well-defined and staffed appropriately? Does the mix of skills and experience meet the needs, or are there skills or knowledge gaps? Do the people work well together, collaborating effectively as a team and jumping in to help one another to ensure goals are met? If there are multiple development teams working in concert, are they in sync with the vision, and how can they achieve their shared mission? Are they empowered, engaged and aligned with the business’s goals? Having people in place with the right skills, experience and attitude are pivotal to success. When evaluating a development team, we look at how people perform both individually and as a team. In these engagements, we don’t dive deep-instead, doing a “sniff test” in each of these areas-looking at the company’s technology development capabilities through these three different lenses. ![]() And the platform is what they’ve developed, deployed and supported.
